It was always going to be moving to say goodbye to Emmerdale legend Edna Birch after the sad off-screen death of actress Shirley Stelfox but the final scene of the week was a touching tribute. Both Sandy and Ashley struggled to cope with her passing but had managed to find some closure together, with Ashley even having a crisis of faith. But as if a sign from Edna herself, the funeral order of service fluttered to the ground in front of his feet and gave Ashley a moment of hope. Sandy found his own way to come to terms with his loss in the form of his walkie-talkie and he used this to speak to her, saying “Job well done, old girl! Over and out.” Then the camera panned up over the village in dusk. Beautiful.
