With Ashley’s funeral taking place this week understandably there were many scenes I could have chosen as my stand-out but it was this one, focusing on the wider impact of Ashley’s death and the beautiful cinematography that won my choice. As Ashley and Laurel said “goodbye” in her dream, we saw Arthur reading his poem to Gabby, Bernice and Doug in a moment that couldn’t fail to tug at the heart strings. Scenes at night, and this one which begun outside the window, gave a special and almost filmic quality, as did the moments of black as the lights were turned off. Then there was Harriet having a solemn moment of contemplation before the candle was blown out and finally Laurel, turning away from the bottle and watching an old home video and finding comfort in images from the past. It was a very quiet and moving closing scene to the episode and one befitting of silent credits too.
